Head of EDW

Shafiq Ahmad

Shafiq Ahmad is a prominent lawyer and human rights defender now living in exile. Known for his unwavering support for civilian supremacy, respect for human rights, and accountable governance in Pakistan, he has been a vocal critic of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), military’s undue influence in politics, and the state oppression of dissidents notably the Baluch people.

Shafiq Ahmed channels much of his activism through social media platforms, where he highlights systemic injustices and challenges authoritarian policies. His bold advocacy, however, has made him a target of state-led repression, including multiple abductions, detentions, and legal harassment. He has been abducted several times, most notably in March, June, and December 2019, enduring torture and enforced disappearances. In April 2019, he was charged under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) for allegedly defaming state institutions—a euphemism for the armed forces.

Despite these challenges, Shafiq Ahmad remains steadfast in his legal and advocacy work. His resilience has earned him both local and international recognition, with organizations such as the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OIAD) condemning the violations of his rights and raising concerns about the risks he faces. In an environment where speaking out against the establishment often leads to persecution, Shafiq Ahmad continues to be a strong voice for justice, democracy, and human rights in Pakistan.
